Our mission is to promote, celebrate, and engage the global citizen by telling the story of the origins, history, and cultural expression of rural and urban communities. In a time of a climate crises, we must change the conversation by bringing to life the wonders of this tropical habitat that will inspire action to keep the Amazon and its people flourishing.
About Us
The Amazon Museum is a non-profit international cultural organization created by a team of experts with a mission to promote, celebrate, and preserve the natural and cultural heritage of the iconic river basin. We see the museum as a way to draw international attention to the Amazon’s pivotal role in shaping history and advancing global sustainability in a time of a gathering climate crisis. Telling the story of the origins, history, and cultural expressions of the rural and urban communities of the Amazon Basin is at the core of the Museum’s identity.
The Amazon Museum is a broad initiative encompassing a sophisticated multimedia website portal that will develop exhibits in collaboration with a community of photographers, media experts, journalists, and national and regional museums in the nine countries of the River Basin countries. Our virtual galleries will be complemented by a multimedia Amazon Museum magazine, featuring digital storytelling and interactive tools. In time, the Amazon Museum is destined to launch a bricks-and-mortar facility – a world class marker designed to project a new and hopefully transformational vision of the tropical forest biome and its inhabitants.
In synch with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), we recognize the claims of the traditional peoples we celebrate to their intellectual heritage and their cultural history. The peoples of Amazonia – the hundreds of Indigenous communities, pioneer settlers and the more recent migrants – will take part actively in the museum’s conception and development. The same commitment will also shape our governance and curatorial model, which will involve traditional peoples in decision-making at every step.
